Fowl
Pheasant, wild duck, dove and grouse are our popular game birds.
The pheasant was imported into the wilds of Sweden about a hundred years ago and has its
origins in Asia. It lives
mainly in the cultured landscapes of the South of Sweden. The
wild duck (mallard) is spread over all of
Sweden
and prefers any kind of wetlands. One appreciates the number of
breeding couples to about 100,000. The wood pigeon (ringdove)
lives in deciduous forests as well as spruce forests, but it
also occurs in small groves in the cultured landscape. The wood
pigeon usually lay twice or thrice a year with two eggs to each
litter. The willow grouse occurs in north Värmland, Dalarna and
Hälsingland and to the north in the bare mountain regions above
the tree line. The rock ptarmigan lives in the high bare
mountain regions in the stonier lava regions where it is well
camouflaged.
