Red deer and fallow deer

These beautiful and gracious animals exist both in the wild and in semi-domesticated parks preferably in the south of Sweden. The red deer is a natural part of the Swedish fauna whereas the fallow deer was imported during the seventeenth century. The deer can develop very beautiful horns to the joy of many a proud hunter. It can be difficult for the inexperienced to tell the two species apart, but the fallow deer is somewhat smaller and has a shorter muzzle. The tail is long and distinctly black with a white underside. Red deer have yellow/brown hindquarters and a short tail. A splendid red deer can weigh up towards 160 kilos whilst a fallow deer weighs somewhere between 80-90 kilos. The deer has a pleasant meat with a slightly more subtle gamy flavour.
